In cooperation with GIZ, Climate-Eval organized a webcast on monitoring and evaluation of (M&E) climate change projects and programs. The webcast is the final session of the two-day international workshop "Tracking Successful Adaptation - Smart Monitoring For Good Results" held in Bonn, Germany. The workshop was organised by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), together with the Adaptation Partnership, DFID and USAID.
Rob D. van den Berg, Director of the Global Environment Facility Independent Evaluation Office (GEF IEO), delivered the opening remarks via a live video feed from Washington DC. Talking about climate adaptation, he said that "the difficulties are actually in determining what actually would constitute successful adaptation". This is central to the role of the GEF Independent Evaluation Office as "the GEF is the biggest funder of adaptation activities in developing countries". The workshop generally revolved around the theme of determining the success of adaptation projects, national programs, and climate finance and in particular, address the need for methods and procedures to systematically measure achievements.
An average of 60 participants logged-on to listen to the discussions to discuss the issues of climate adaptation evaluation. Despite the audio problems encountered at the beginning of the webcast, one attendee found that the webinar "(provided) remote access to the workshop and visual summaries of sessions with useful opportunities to raise questions in real time". For us who are in distant locations these training sessions are very important, wrote another participant. Online participants had the opportunity to interact with the attendees of the workshop in Bonn through the question-and-answer portion. Questions raised included practical methodologies, incentives to develop methods and approaches, and existing tools to integrating M&E in decision-making processes, among others.
Climate-Eval and GIZ plan to hold a follow-up online consultation to continue the discussions from the workshop.
